There's a divide but it's not digital. Is it just possible that some people just don't need the net. ( big DUH)

The article referenced shows that a sizable portion of the population wouldn't know that Seesmic isn't part of the US Geological survey or that the latter has an interest in seismic events.

We're dealing with the intersection of those people that just can't enjoy themselves unless everyone else is doing the same thing. e.g those that want to buy the world a coke but would feel guilty about it with all that high fructose corn syrup, empty calories and oh my gawd a corporation being involved! Then there's the populace they want to help. Thing is most of those people being "helped" aren't blazing a trail onto the new frontier of the net and see no need to be there.

"You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons. "
Anyway enough of my wrecked pseudo philosophy..

“Nearly one out of three household heads has never used a computer to create a document,” said John Barrett, director, research, Parks Associates. “These data underscore the significant digital divide between the connected majority and the homes in the unconnected minority that rarely, if ever, use a computer.
Now that we've established that not everyone wants to be online can we stopped being taxed as if that wasn't the case. Take a look at the same percentage of people that didn't read a book last year

That suggests that 20% of the households in the country are enough to explain the current resurgence of American Gladiators.I digress. Sadly the article doesn't have the info on how many people have $100 cable bills and > 40" TVs yet no net but , anecdotally , not having internet is a deliberate choice.

Public access is something we're all paying for if we have a phone line, house or a myriad of other schemes the state enforces on us in the name of crossing the digital divide. I don't have cable tv, got rid of satellite since I use the net to get my info. I save $50 or so a month by doing so.Anyone that wants to get online that has a charged tv service could do so if they wanted but they've decided in many cases not to.

This is the same fatal flaw in socialized medicine that assumes that just because you don't have coverage that you want it. Means that you want it and are willing to incur additional costs to do so.

Hey when we're all super, then NO one will be. I get to work with annoyingly smart people on a daily basis and rather than dislike them for it it's more of a kick start, e.g aspirational for others though I think they get a little jealous that they won out in life's lottery and rather than having to do anything stunningly original with it ( yeah I know I'm still working on it) it seems easier to create an anonymous mass to be consumed by. Either that or they've ran out of people to forward Nigerian scams to.
