Disruptive futures..how big a part does the fortune 500 have in getting us there? ( thoughtlet # 34)
After a rather interesting discussion we had about what the horrible term 3.0 would be like it turns out that we have quite different opinions ranging from 3d environs to my , oddly timely considering this month's Wired focus on mapping and what Bruce Sterling is calling the hyperlocal web wish to tag the world and have our mobile devices act as our local avatar either through the nascent experiments in having the camera on the phone take a shot , send it to the service, you can book there, pay for admission , save it for later, blast it to your friends to show them where you are.. Want to get reviews, shoot the ISBN, hell it can even tell you that it's cheaper three blocks down or offer to d\l an available audio version to your device.
Boring commercial applications for the most part but to catalyse some interesting unintended consequences we have to "plan" it first.
On reflection tonight though I tried to think of any on phenonema , movement or technology that's been truly useful or dispruptive in the last five years that came from anyone I would recognise in the FTSE 100 or the Fortune 500. I'm not claiming that they haven't been improved upon, modified and the odd innovation but the spark seems to come from elsewhere only to catch fire then have someone acquire it and toss on some green and wet branches and smother it. Blogging, Podcasting,Youtube,Myspace( k was incubated but I don't believe it's outwith my main point) ,Skype,Paypal all started outwith the confines of a parent that may have sent them to bed without supper , asked them to grow up and get back to making a Gantt chart.
