Things I learned this week Podcasting internally.
Audacity and one of my Dells are not having fun. The onboard soundcard/ proc stopped working at about 6 stereo tracks for playback meaning way more "irrerversible" mixes. In the end assembled it in SoundForge which is "just" a stereo editor but it's fast has better region managment and I could always make 2 new files to fix together then merge into the main trunk all with undos going back to 1982
The biggest issue though is the crappy speakers/ headphones which masked all kinds of "evil" and as long as people listen to it
I would expect Audacity to hold together on a 2.8Ghz 2gb system.
So the show, which is internal so I can't share ,was something that I'm not as happy as I could be with bit it's got enough in it to amuse people. I know at least one that laughed 3 times -and- in the right places to make it worthwhile plus I get to hassle my friends to perform under pressure![]()
lessons.
Work's a poor place to have an omni directional mic within a group and the best results all came from using lapel mics ( lavalier) which are naturally close to the source though they are a pain in the ass to have an impromptu four person chat with. I'm tempted to try a pzm or boundary mic which I am trying to win on Ebay. Thing is people can forget they have the clip on andlose a degree of self consciousness that comes from having a taser shaped stereo mic placed in their face . Sadly they get too comfy and try to walk off while wearing it
People have no concept of a minute. If you ask someone to talk for a minute about an item they usually can't think of things to say but ask them to keep it to a minute...
You need to get a workflow going first. Produce all your elements intersitials bed music etc in advance. Then dump in the voices. bang.. And if you want to go nuts edit out the ums and ahhs.. No don't unless it's a really long pause or really embarrassing ( in which case leave it in) people talk like that we're not trying to be CBC, BBC or like PBS which already has taken that on as their job
