Blog Archive Busyness vs. Burst: Why Corporate Web Workers Look Unproductive «

Now how can I make this post not look self serving? I'm posting about those posting to blogs during their work hours and if I don't open my office door a feedback loop is going to emerge that shakes the building  to bits..

Seriously this has been  one of the largest cognitive dissonances I've had in the workplace in both the UK and the USA   where style over substance is often stressed.  This article  posits two main types of environment  Busyness and burst  economies and why I think they are onto something. Trying to  integrate the software of humans  into the set of instructions for making money (corporation)  has a couple of issues.  Quite frankly there are jobs that people  won't do without compensation , it's an elephant  in the room  situation.   It's obvious and there's people that would be doing their "job" if they didn't need to earn money  because the reward is in  the doing but it's obvious too that a certain part of the population want to do their  40 hours and turn off.   Why the same set of rules is still prevalent in both scenarios  seems to make little sense other than  "keeping up appearances"  of busyness as usual.

I've never stayed at a job where  I couldn't be said to enjoy 80% of it  for 80% of the time.  I've never been fired,  was made redundant by a very generous AOL  which I recommend getting  acquired by , oh wait that was good advice , five years ago ,  but I bring it up because  of this next paragraph.

The lack of understanding between busy and burst goes beyond just the inability of the busy to see the value in using Web 2.0 tools. In almost every aspect of work, bursters look entirely unproductive and irresponsible when judged by busyness economy rules.

I managed support  by phone, instant messenger and email , solo, for months  based on my ability to  not be tied to a specific geographic area  or a set time.  E.G the work arrives, is done,   reset  repeat for all the reasons listed here.  To be able to respond timely  over 7 days it's obvious that during the week  I had to take care of life  in "normal "  hours  which allowed me  to cover way more than  40 hours in the cube would  I "was" my IM client message for most of the year   ( been a little disconnected of late though   Anyway fascinating entry..  ( theirs not mine.. )

Enjoy
