Jobs on DRM . I wonder if his logic extends to their own software:D
Apple - Thoughts on Music
From a post by Steve Jobs
The problem, of course, is that there are many smart people in the world, some with a lot of time on their hands, who love to discover such secrets and publish a way for everyone to get free (and stolen) music. They are often successful in doing just that, so any company trying to protect content using a DRM must frequently update it with new and harder to discover secrets. It is a cat-and-mouse game.
I wonder if the same could be applied to the Quicktime Pro I've legally purchased and the pain in the ass it is to keep having to retrieve the license info during install/reinstalls as I change machines during the day. DRM is being misunderstood by people jumping on the idea that this means "free for all" The idea that penalizing your legal customers to prevent criminal action is stupid yet one which the old business world is very comfy with, they learned from the best Government money can buyafter all. Roadblocks are very inefficient at detecting crime based on the number of people stopped but it looks like you're doing something. Job's looks like he's doing something other than promoting their self interest prior to several EEC nations removing a revenue stream by making them offer music that can be played on other devices. Ultimately if the music co's want to horde and die, we should let them.
