Podcast media Expo 2006 Saturday
K,
It's going to take a while isn't it? Most people have managed to write a paragraph on a session, sometimes even the whole day yet I'm puzzled as to the brevity from a group of people not shy in expressing their opinions, Posting , " X said and the "me too" on
Had breakfast with David and Erin and then headed to the day's keynote which I've already written up by Andrew Baron from Rocketboom. After which Erin took a run out the building to go shopping and returned later in the day to pick up her prize from Samson audio ( yeah I know I said a review would show up, it still may
I headed out to the circuit and having not spent a lot of time talking to people the day prior came late and left early on many sessions ( knowing that their will be audio to catch up on later is very useful)
First up:
Tee Morris, author of Podcast for dummies ( damn I hate those books and have refused to purchase them on the basis that I wouldn't read "chicken soup for the chronic masturbator" Anyway this was a jump start on how to get started equipment, format and hey how's this for an afterthought in most people's shows audience. Purpose of communication.
Then I skipped a bit, wandered over to Podango , spoke to people on the floor and caught Jerry Franklin's talk on how to get the most out of Audacity. ( I'm a snob, while I admire the features on this free program I can't stand the workflow and was eager to find out if my approach to it is making it harder than it should be. Essentially I've suffered from exposure to Protools and Sound Forge , true non destructive editing , inline effects and a tendency not to crash. So .. audacity is still worth the money
but anyone that's buying a small podcast studio you're getting decent Multi Track software in most cases ( if you pay attention) and I suggest you make friends with it too.
more lunch ( don't worry social parts of the show get their own post) then off to Doug Kaye, from IT conversations "secret lives of MP3's" Since I think of myself as an audio geek even basic items get my interest when they are being presented by people who are enthusiastic about their subject.
Best of all they announced an application that should resolve one big problem people have with their podcasts which is maintaining a decent level. The Levelator a free ( for non profit) tool that acts as a hybrid rms normalization effect. I've been trying it out on casts that I didn't record it does a good job, and the price is right. Go run it over your old stuff.
Last up Craig Shoemaker over at Polymorphic podcast , Rss and websites :what works for online listeners. Good info in putting as much care and attention into your site and feed presentation as you do for making your show.
Note I didn't go to a single panel, not that there were many , but at nearly every event I've been to no one has enough time to develop any points , or rebut them so it's a frustration I was glad to avoid and intentional on the organizers part ( thanks)
So coming up.. Walking the floor and the exhibitors, people I met and the round up.
