Government 101 ( loop)
Oh joy traffic enforcement radar, the static type to measure speed, comes to the valley's loop 101 freeway. The reason? Oh our safety, cough, er revenue generation for the city of Scottsdale. As I predicted there would be a camera very close to the Phoenix / Scottsdale split heading east on 101 which is not known for accidents , there's also one in the opposite direction. Wait a minute you're trying to reduce accidents in your jurisdiction yet you place it on the way out, Safety first?
When I was in Scotland the A1 near Haddington was upgraded to a freeway ( dual carriageway) and before one single car was on the road Gatso appeared which is weird, I recall being told that they cameras are only used on accident hot spots or on dangerous roads neither of which can be applied to a brand new section of road so was that for safety?
Given Scottsdale's record with photo enforcement ( not good :) and the problems of having private companies regulate them, i.e if you get a percentage of the profit how keen on maintaining the cameras accuracy are you going to be? Let's ask the people in San Diego about that:. If they were into safety first then one of the greatest reductions , and a cheap one, is increasing the time the yellow light stays on, how did they find that out? Well the company shaved time of the yellow display and found they caught a lot more people at the expense of a few more accidents. $271 a ticket , about $75 a ticket went to the operator
Qui custodiet ipsos custodes?
Economically.. They are removing millions of dollars from the local economy that could have been spent there which is not the effect politicians see. They only EVER see the primary desired effect of their action.
